Are you accepting new patients?
Yes! We are always happy to welcome new patients to Toronto Beach Eye Care.
How long does an eye exam usually take?
A complete oculo-visual assessment usually takes approximately 40 minutes. This may include testing of your vision, eye health, eye pressure, and a retinal exam. In some cases, your doctor may recommend pupil dilation to allow for a more detailed view of the back of the eye.
Do you accept walk-ins?
Eye exams are typically booked by appointment. However, if we have a cancellation or a doctor has availability, we will do our best to accommodate same-day appointments. We recommend calling ahead so we can let you know what times may be available.
Is there an additional fee for a contact lens exam?
Yes. Contact lens wearers require additional testing and assessment beyond a standard eye exam. This allows the doctor to evaluate the fit, comfort, prescription, eye health, and safety of your contact lenses. Because of this, there is a small additional fee for contact lens wearers at their annual exam.
How often should I have my eyes checked?
The recommended frequency for eye exams depends on your age, medical history, eye health, family history, and risk factors.
In general, children and teens, adults over 65, contact lens wearers, and patients with diabetes or certain medical conditions should be examined regularly. Adults between 19 and 64 are often seen every 1–2 years, depending on their individual needs. Your optometrist will recommend the appropriate schedule for you.
If I see fine, why do I still need an eye exam?
Clear vision does not always mean healthy eyes. Vision changes can happen gradually, and sometimes one eye can compensate for the other, making changes difficult to notice.
Many eye conditions do not cause obvious symptoms in the early stages. Routine eye exams help detect problems early, when they are often easier to manage. Eye exams can also reveal signs related to general health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune disease, inflammatory conditions, and other systemic health issues.
When should my child have their first eye exam?
We provide children’s eye exams starting at 6 months of age. Early eye exams help assess vision development, eye alignment, focusing ability, and overall eye health.
Are children’s eye exams covered by OHIP?
Many children’s eye exams are covered by OHIP, provided the child has a valid Ontario health card. Coverage can vary depending on age and eligibility, so please contact our office if you have any questions before booking.
Are senior eye exams covered by OHIP?
Some eye exams for seniors are covered by OHIP, depending on age, timing, and medical eligibility. Please bring your valid Ontario health card to your appointment, and our team can help review whether your exam may be OHIP-covered.
What should I bring to my eye exam?
Please bring your current glasses, contact lenses, contact lens packaging or prescription if available, a list of current medications, your health card, and any insurance information you would like to use. It is also helpful to know your family history of eye disease, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, or retinal disease.
Will my pupils be dilated?
Your optometrist may recommend dilation when a more detailed retinal examination is needed. Dilation can temporarily make your vision blurry and your eyes more sensitive to light, especially for near work. We recommend bringing sunglasses and arranging transportation if you are concerned about driving afterward.
Do I need an appointment to look at frames?
No appointment is needed to browse frames. You are welcome to stop in during regular business hours, and our team will be happy to help you choose frames that suit your prescription, style, and fit.
How long will it take before my glasses are ready?
Single vision lenses usually take approximately 3–5 business days. Progressive lenses generally take approximately 5–12 business days. Specialty lenses, high prescriptions, certain coatings, or custom orders may take longer.
Do my lenses come with anti-reflective and scratch-resistant coatings?
Yes. Unless otherwise requested, our lenses include anti-reflective and scratch-resistant coatings.
Do prescription sunglasses come with UV protection?
Yes. For eye safety, all sunglass lenses we sell include UV400 protection.
Can you direct bill my insurance?
We can direct bill many major insurance plans. Coverage depends on your specific insurance provider and plan. Please bring your insurance information with you, and our team will be happy to check whether direct billing is available.
Can I get a copy of my glasses prescription?
Yes. After your eye exam, you may request a copy of your glasses prescription. Your doctor will let you know when the prescription is finalized and ready to be released.
Do you offer contact lens fittings?
Yes. We offer contact lens fittings, refittings, and annual contact lens evaluations. A contact lens prescription is different from a glasses prescription and requires additional measurements and assessment to ensure the lenses fit properly and are safe for your eyes.
What should I do if I have an eye emergency?
If you are experiencing sudden vision loss, flashes of light, new floaters, eye pain, double vision, a curtain or shadow in your vision, or a possible eye injury, please call our office right away. If we are closed or you are experiencing a serious emergency, seek urgent medical care or go to the nearest emergency department.
